Football Federation of Congo is Suspended by FIFA

As tensions between the Ministry of Sports and the football organisation have escalated, FIFA has announced that the Congolese Football Federation (FECOFOOT) would be suspended immediately. Police intervention and the closing of the nation’s sporting facilities were the results of the conflict, which had been going on for several months.

Congolese clubs and national teams are currently prohibited from competing in international tournaments as a result of the suspension. They have also been excluded from important FIFA and African Football Confederation (CAF) funding and development initiatives.

Rufin Loemba, FECOFOOT’s Communication Officer, said that the effect on young players is among the most agonising effects of the suspension. “Our young players were supposed to compete in the UNIFAC tournament in Cameroon starting on the 16th, and that is the most painful part,” Loemba stated. These cadets, who are U17 players, are competing in a qualifying event for the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. It hurts a lot that the suspension has now been put in place. You can imagine how this impacts the approximately 5,000 or perhaps 10,000 people who depend on football for their lives, as it is the most popular sport in Congo.
