Rome Claims that Because of Errors in the ICC warrant, it Freed the Libyan Officer

Rome recently released Osama Elmasry Njeem, a Libyan military colonel who the International Criminal Court wanted for alleged war crimes. The action sparked a court probe into Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and infuriated opposition parties in Italy.

Italy’s justice minister is now defending the ruling, claiming that the ICC’s arrest warrant contained errors and omissions. The official maintained that the document contained “uncertainty” regarding the time frame in which Njeem was believed to have committed the alleged crimes. According to him, the warrant suggested that they began in February 2011 and then mentioned February 2015. The minister demanded that the court explain the purported discrepancies.

Meanwhile, the ICC has called for explanations for Njeem’s release and accused the Italian government of allowing him to leave without any talks. Since Libya’s civil war in 2011, the court has been investigating claims of war crimes committed there.
