DRC: As Negotiations Drag on, M23 Rebels take Control of a New Town Close to the Ugandan Border
According to media sources, the Rwanda-backed gang took control of Kamandi Gîte, a strategically important town, on Sunday, November 3.
Situated on the shores of Lake Edward, Kamandi Gîte provides access to Beni.
After the town fell to the rebels, local media reported that forcible displacement was seen, citing sources on the ground. Self-defence fighters known as Wezalendo, or patriots, who are affiliated with the DRC’s military, confronted the M23 rebels.
The new conflict arises as experts from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda continue to discuss the Luanda process.
Angola serves as a go-between for the neighbours. November 16 is the date of the meeting.
According to reports, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo have reached an agreement on a plan that calls for the pullout of armed personnel and the neutralisation of the FDLR, which comprised combatants involved in the Rwandan genocide in 1994.
