Drc: Fighting Between Rebels And Militias Has Left At Least 16 People Dead

According to a government official, 16 villagers were murdered in fighting between pro-government militias and local rebels in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) on Thursday. This was the most recent breach of a ceasefire that had been declared to aid the region’s millions of displaced people.

According to Isaac Kibira, an administrative official in Rutshuru, the villagers were killed in fighting between the M23 rebel group, which is thought to be supported by neighboring Rwanda, and local Wazalendo fighters, who frequently fight alongside Congolese security forces, in Rutshuru territory, North Kivu province.

Seven civilians tragically lost their lives as the Wazalendo teenagers attacked the M23 rebel position, according to Mr. Kibira. He said that nine people were killed when a car in Rutshuru caught fire as a result of another altercation.

According to the officials, none of the slain peasants took part in the battle.

The violence has sparked fresh worries about the viability of the ceasefire, which was implemented on August 4 in an effort to put an end to the fighting and help millions of people in need. The government and rebels have broken a number of previous ceasefires that were declared.
