The helicopter went down approximately 400 kilometers (250 miles) northwest of Nairobi, the capital, in Elgeyo Marakwet County, in the western Rift Valley of Kenya. The local media said the helicopter caught fire. Reports in the Kenyan press state that Francis Ogolla was born on February 12, 1962. On April 28, 2023, he was named head of Kenya’s Defense Forces. His wife and two kids survive him.
In remembrance of the victims, the government has declared a three-day national mourning period that will begin on Friday, April 19.
