Yoweri Museveni, the 81-Year-Old President of Uganda, was Sworn in for an Eighth Term
As Yoweri Museveni, the 81-year-old president of Uganda, takes the oath of office for an eighth term, speculation about his successor is already intensifying. Despite the likelihood of an electoral victory, his son, army head General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has made no secret of his desire to assume power.
Forty years. Yoweri Museveni, the president of Uganda, has held office for that long. The 81-year-old was sworn in on Tuesday to serve a further five-year term as president, which may be his last, though it may not be the last for the Museveni family.
Army chief General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the president’s son and presumed heir, oversaw days of preparations for the military procession that will accompany Museveni’s eighth inauguration. Russian-built Sukhoi fighter jets will fly loudly over official ceremonial grounds in Kampala, the capital of Uganda. In front of thousands of spectators in the Kololo area of Kampala, Museveni took the oath of office and accepted the ceremonial instruments of power.
Millions of Ugandans now acknowledge that Museveni’s presidency, the only one they have known, is coming to an end. The nature of the changeover and the level of orderliness during his remaining term in office are still unknown.
