Uganda’s Crackdown Intensifies as Rebel Leader Faces Treason Charges

The pace of Uganda’s political crackdown is picking up, with opposition leader Kizza Besigye appearing in court on treason charges as concerns mount over a growing attack on dissent. One of his leading lawyers was detained earlier this month and Besigye told the court the trial could not go on while his lawyers worried for their personal safety. The veteran opposition leader has been held in custody since his abduction in bordering Kenya last year.

The operation has been led by General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of President Yoweri Museveni and commander of Uganda’s army. He has ordered the arrest of activists, legislators and lawyers in recent weeks, garnering international criticism for his increasingly extreme policies.

The latest victim was one of the largest independent media groups in East Africa, with its publications, television and radio stations shut down by soldiers over the weekend. The firm says it is now in talks with the military to reopen its outlets in Uganda, although staff remain barred from their offices as pressure rises on the authorities to reinstate media activities.
