More Than One Million Migrants Seek legal Status in Spain

More than one million undocumented migrants and asylum seekers have filed for legal status through Spain’s huge regularization program. Long lines formed around the country as applicants rushed to register before the official deadline, with the initiative receiving twice the number of applications anticipated.

The program allows qualified migrants a one-year residency and work visa if they can demonstrate they have no criminal record and were living in Spain or seeking international refuge before the eligibility deadline.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has defended the strategy, claiming that migration is necessary for Spain’s future. He claims that migrants assist address labor shortages, counter the country’s aging population, and contribute significantly to economic growth.

The plan distinguishes Spain from many European countries that have tightened their policies on irregular migration in recent years.

While advocates regard the project as a realistic and compassionate answer, rights groups claim many applicants have encountered administrative obstacles, such as delays in acquiring official paperwork. They caution that some people may still be refused legal status despite filing applications before the deadline.
