Niger: The Attackers Who killed 11 Troops at Niamey Airport are Being Sought After

Niger’s security forces have started looking for the perpetrators of Thursday’s attack on Niamey’s airport, which resulted in the deaths of at least 11 troops and two civilians. The Al-Qaeda-affiliated group claimed responsibility for the raid at the Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey, which also resulted in the deaths of twenty-two of its members.

The defense and security forces are conducting a massive effort to locate and eliminate the remaining elements. The fully secure Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey is still open to air travel, according to a military statement.

Residents reported that gunfire broke out early in the morning and continued for hours close to the airport, where a sizable military force was subsequently stationed. The Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims, or JNIM as it is known in Arabic, released a brief statement in the evening claiming to have carried out “a suicide attack” on the airport and a nearby military camp.

The military junta that has ruled Niger for three years has had difficulty containing the jihadist bloodshed that has plagued the West African nation for ten years.Around six o’clock (0500 GMT), I heard the first bullets. According to a resident who spoke with AFP over the phone, “the shooting was coming from the airport entrance, where there is a security checkpoint.”According to an airport source, the gunmen arrived at the checkpoint “by taxi” before running into “fierce resistance” from security personnel.
