The UAE is Accused by Khartoum of Directly Participating in Drone attacks on Port Sudan

Sudan has accused the United Arab Emirates of conducting a drone strike earlier this month on Port Sudan, the administrative capital during the conflict. Al-Harith Idriss, Khartoum’s ambassador to the UN, claimed in a speech in New York on Monday that the operation was carried out from a UAE military facility with assistance from Emirati navy ships in the Red Sea.

Sudan has accused the Gulf state for the first time of directly intervening militarily in its civil conflict against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Idriss also said that the attack on Port Sudan on May 4 was retaliation for an army strike on a purported Emirati warplane in the city of Nyala, which is under RSF control, the day before.

Khartoum accused the UAE of equipping and supporting the rebel group in the deadly battle, which is in its third year, and Khartoum recently severed diplomatic ties with the UAE. The UAE did not immediately respond to this most recent statement and refuted the claim.

Government representatives, diplomats, and aid groups have so far seen Port Sudan as a haven. However, it has been subjected to a barrage of drone attacks since the beginning of the month, mainly targeting army installations, the main airport, and petroleum storage facilities.
