The Popular film “Roots” candidate John Amos passes Away at the Age of 84

Amos’ publicist, Belinda Foster, announced the death of her client in a statement released on Tuesday.

On August 21, the 84-year-old passed away from natural causes. In the 1970s, “Good Times” showcased one of the first Black two-parent households on television, portrayed by the 84-year-old actor as James Evans Sr. According to his son Kelly Christopher Amos, “many fans consider him their TV father.” He was born John Allen Amos Jr. on December 27, 1939, in Newark, New Jersey. He played football for Colorado State University and earned a sociology degree.

Amos played his first significant TV role as the weatherman Gordy Howard on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” from 1970 to 1973. He received solid ratings and critical acclaim for his portrayal of the family patriarch on “Good Times.”

He was fired after three seasons, but he recovered fast enough to play the adult Kunta Kinte, the main character in “Roots,” which is based on Alex Haley’s novel and takes place in the years leading up to and including the American Civil War. Amos received one of the 37 Emmy nods for the critically acclaimed and popular miniseries.

Amos claimed to have Liberian ancestry. He claims that he took his kids to Liberia when they were young and that they still have friends there.
