The iconic Niger Opposition Leader and Former Prime Minister, Hama Amadou, Passed Away at the Age of 74.
Hama Amadou, the former prime minister of Niger, passed away on Thursday at the age of 74 in a hospital in Niamey, the nation’s capital. They did not reveal the reason of death.
Amadou served as speaker of Parliament from 2011 to 2014 and as prime minister twice, from 1995 to 1996 and 1999 to 2007. The politician made three unsuccessful attempts to win the top position.
As the head of one of the main political parties in the nation, the Nigerien Democratic Movement for an African Federation, which he established in 2009.
He was a well-known member of the MNSD party until starting the Nigerien Democratic Movement for an African Federation in 2009.
Throughout his career, the well-known politician was incarcerated multiple times. Notably, he was imprisoned in a maximum-security facility in 2009 after being charged with embezzlement, a charge that was eventually dropped.
He was imprisoned once more in 2015 in relation to an investigation into a criminal network that trafficked children from Nigeria; he denied the charge, which he characterised as politically motivated.Amadou was still incarcerated, but the Constitutional Court allowed him to run for president in the March 2016 election, which he won second place in.
