The Agricultural Revolution in Cape Verde: From Drought to Innovation

Cape Verde is experiencing a spectacular agricultural change just four years after a devastating drought. With lush greenery developing as a sign of progress, the archipelago, which once struggled to maintain agriculture, is now embracing innovation. Installing modern infrastructure, such as seawater desalination plants, is a major factor driving this change.

Farmers will genuinely benefit from these steps to increase output and enhance water availability. Many already make a living from farming, but they frequently require extra cash from professions like construction. With this assistance, they can depend entirely on their agricultural output.

Cape Verde is making great efforts to expand seawater desalination and introduce novel crops. In addition to these initiatives, a comprehensive agricultural insurance program is being implemented to give farmers even more security.

This agricultural strategy is making Cape Verde a regional model with the help of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Social protection was a major topic of discussion at the 16th meeting of the multidisciplinary team from the FAO’s office in Praia for West Africa. Bintia Stephen Tchicaya, FAO Public Policy Officer, stressed the significance of seeing social protection as an investment.
