South Africa: Due to Financial Constraints, the UN WFP Closes its Presence There

Due to financial constraints, the United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP), which primarily depends on U.S. financing, announced Monday that it will close its office in southern Africa. Nearly half of WFP’s yearly donations come from the United States, but as part of President Donald Trump’s “America First” agenda, the organization is currently cutting back on international aid contracts worldwide.

According to regional spokeswoman Tomson Phiri, the organization would combine its operations in eastern and southern Africa, overseeing both from Nairobi. He promised that the continuing nation operations in Southern Africa, where WFP is helping millions of drought-affected people, would not be impacted by this move.

Phiri underlined the goal of making every dollar matter in order to optimize resources for frontline staff. However, he did not directly attribute the decision to Trump’s aid reduction, saying that “the donor funding outlook has become more constrained.”

Over 90% of the U.S. Agency for International Development’s foreign aid contracts, which account for more than $58 billion in total U.S. assistance globally, are being slashed by the Trump administration.
