South Africa Confirms US Envoy’s Credentials Despite Efforts to Repair Relations
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa received the new US ambassador’s diplomatic credentials on Wednesday, as bilateral relations remain strained. Brent Bozell, a right-wing media critic and fervent backer of President Donald Trump, took over the position in February but had a difficult start with remarks about South Africa’s racial policies and court judgments.
Bozell and his spouse were greeted with a guard of honor at the Sefako Makgatho Presidential Guest House in the capital, where they handed over their credentials to Ramaphosa.I can’t tell you how many people told me before I moved here that I’d fall in love with the country quickly. Bozell confirmed that it took only two months to happen.
We are two nations with strong common values and interests… It is my intention throughout my time here to build on those shared interests, to build on self-esteem, to build on our shared principles, and to move our two countries to places they have never been before,” the 70-year-old envoy remarked. Nineteen other envoys, including those from the partially recognized Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, Haiti, and Cuba, also delivered papers.
Ramaphosa emphasized that diplomats should respect their host country’s sovereignty, exercise discretion, and voice issues through productive channels, rather than “confrontational” public criticism. This approach, I believe, fosters strong connections between nations and helps to advance our respective countries’ interests through mutual respect,” he stated.
