Security Council: African Migrants and refugees are Still Trying to Reach Europe
According to the UN, 97,000 migrants have entered Libya since last April, while more than 350,000 Sudanese refugees and asylum seekers have been granted protection in North Africa thus far this year.
It is crucial to emphasise that the problems do not originate in North Africa. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Sivanka Dhanapala, stated that a comprehensive, cross-regional response is necessary, beginning at the source of the trips.
Overall, according to Dhanapala, between January and August of this year, there were probably about 134,000 refugees and migrants who left North and West Africa for Europe by sea, which is a little less than the same period last year.
The council was also briefed by Par Liljert, the director of the International Organisation for Migration, who stated that one of the urgent issues of the day is acknowledging the factors that push people to leave their homes and the difficult obstacles of navigating migration routes. He said that these issues call for “firm and urgent action.”
