Russia Refuses to Back the UN Future Pact

A UN plan that sought to unite the world’s increasingly divided states to address 21st-century issues including artificial intelligence, climate change, and rising war as well as poverty and inequality has received no backing from Russia.

Sergey Vershinin, the deputy minister of foreign affairs for Russia, stated during the Summit of the Future conference in New York on Monday that “we’d like to underscore that the summit’s outcome documents do not impose any obligations on the Russian Federation under provisions which did not achieve consensus.”

The plan was accepted on Sunday by the UN General Assembly.

The leaders of the 193 U.N. member states are urged in the 42-page “Pact for the Future” to fulfill their commitments by taking concrete steps to improve the lives of the world’s more than 8 billion citizens.

At the start of the two-day “Summit of the Future,” which was organized by U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the agreement was signed. Guterres congratulated leaders and diplomats for opening “the door” to a better future.//

To address the issues of the twenty-first century, the United Nations General Assembly passed a “Pact for the Future.” The difficult thing now is getting the world’s diverse nations to work together quickly to carry out the 56 activities outlined in the accord.
