Rights Violations are Brought to Light by Reports of US plans to Repatriate Migrants to Libya

Rights organisations are outraged by reports that the United States may be intending to return migrants to Libya.
Despite legal hurdles, the Trump administration is nevertheless stepping up its attempts to deport migrants to third-party nations. A US judge decided on Wednesday that migrants may not be deported without first being given the chance to contest the decision in court.
The deportees’ status upon arrival is also questioned due to Libya’s extremely stringent asylum processes, and both of the country’s opposing administrations have stated that they would not accept them.
Every year, thousands of people attempt the perilous Mediterranean crossing, with Libya serving as a significant transit centre for asylum seekers attempting to reach Europe. Their maltreatment has been well recorded in Libya, according to estimates.
In 2024, an impartial fact-finding team supported by the UN discovered evidence of crimes against humanity against migrants in Libya. The investigators discovered that among other crimes, the victims had been tortured, murdered, forced to vanish, and enslaved. Tens of thousands of migrants have perished while attempting to flee Libya aboard smugglers’ boats, and dead migrants have been discovered in mass graves around the nation.
