Sudan: The UN Expresses Worry After Drone Strikes Targeted Port Sudan for the Sixth Day in a Row

Friday, May 9, saw another drone attack on Port Sudan, marking the sixth day in a row of attacks in the coastal city that has grown to be a crucial corridor for humanitarian goods and a haven for people escaping Sudan’s two-year conflict.
The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are said to have been responsible for the attacks, which targeted important infrastructure including as the port, the airport, and public buildings. Although there have been no official reports of injuries or damage yet, footage posted online showed dense smoke billowing over the city.
The United Nations has voiced serious concerns, cautioning that the destruction of vital infrastructure and widespread civilian fatalities are hazards associated with this most recent escalation. Via his spokesperson Farhan Haq, UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed his worry at the violence encroaching on a region that has provided a safe haven for thousands of displaced people from Khartoum and beyond.
All sides are being urged by the UN to respect international humanitarian law and abstain from attacking civilians. Now that assistance routes are under jeopardy, the Sudanese crisis might get worse.
