Rescuers Comb Rubble for Survivors after Afghanistan Earthquake

Afghans searched desperately through rubble on Monday after a powerful earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan, leaving at least 800 people dead and more than 2,500 injured, according to the Taliban government.

The 6.0-magnitude quake hit late Sunday in Kunar province, near the city of Jalalabad in neighboring Nangarhar, destroying homes and causing widespread devastation. The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the quake’s epicenter was just 27 kilometers east-northeast of Jalalabad at a shallow depth of 8 kilometers, making the impact more severe. Several aftershocks were also recorded.

Scenes from the disaster showed villagers holding funeral prayers, carrying the injured on stretchers, and digging frantically through debris in search of missing family members. “Five people were martyred in this house, three in that one, and another three nearby,” one villager said. “But a boy and a girl are still missing.”

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed that most of the casualties occurred in Kunar province. Emergency teams continue rescue operations as fears grow that the toll could rise further.
