Putin Will Host Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to Sign Strategic Pact

Russian President Vladimir Putin received his Iranian counterpart, Masoud Pezeshkian, on Friday to formalise a substantial deal between Moscow and Tehran. According to the Kremlin, this “comprehensive strategic partnership” aims to take cooperation between the two countries to new heights. According to the Iranian embassy in Russia’s Telegram post last week, the agreement focusses on “economic and commercial cooperation in the fields of energy, environment, and defence and security issues.”
While the terms of the pact are unclear, it is worth noting that Moscow previously signed a treaty with North Korea under the same title in 2024. Their current partnership is based on a document from 2001, which they have revised on a regular basis. Russia claims that its upcoming agreement with Iran, as well as the previously existing accord with Pyongyang, are “not aimed at any nation.”
“The treaty… is of a constructive nature and seeks to enhance the capabilities of Russia, Iran, and our allies across different regions of the globe,” said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Tuesday. According to Iran’s ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, the deal will be effective for 20 years.
