Private Clinics on The top Line as People Avoid Public Hospitals
Bunia, the hub of the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is relying heavily on private clinics to receive and refer patients, as the community is afraid to visit governmental hospitals for fear of getting the virus.
To battle the virus, Bunia administrative officials have requested private clinics to refer suspected Ebola cases to the main hospital, which houses the Ebola treatment facility. However, some patients are reluctant to transfer. Some patients refuse to travel to the regular hospital where the ETC (Ebola Treatment Center) is located for a consultation because they do not want to,” Dr. Sila Jakwonga, Medical Director of the Citadelle Clinic, a private hospital, told The Associated Press.
Attacks on health workers by furious citizens, distrust among some locals, and violent conflict in hot locations continue to impede efforts to end the Ebola outbreak, which was reported on May 15 and is caused by a severe strain of the disease.
We have yet to get financing or assistance from the numerous partners involved in the battle against Ebola. Dr. Jean Marc Shimbi, director of the Marie Claire Vandekerckhove Clinic, stated that they are currently dependent exclusively on their own resources.
