President Mutharika of Malawi Appoints a Partial Cabinet Quickly

Arthur Peter Mutharika, the recently elected president of Malawi, has begun assembling his administration just one day after taking office. He has named a partial cabinet that includes seasoned individuals to address the country’s dire economic problems.

The president’s office confirmed several key appointments in a statement. Joseph Mwanamvekha, a former banker and economist, was reappointed as Finance Minister. He served in that capacity from 2016 to 2020.

George Chaponda returns as Minister of Foreign Affairs, indicating consistency in foreign policy. By designating Alliance for Democracy member Enock Chihana as the second vice president, Mutharika further cemented his electoral alliance.

There is immediate pressure on the selections to solve Malawi’s worsening economic situation. Mwanamvekha, the newly appointed Finance Minister, takes over a formidable list of issues, such as severe shortages of foreign exchange, widespread fuel scarcity, and a collapsing currency.

As Mutharika’s administration attempts to restore the economy, these problems which have resulted in skyrocketing living expenses and a restricted business environment present the most pressing challenge.
