Port-au-Prince Hosts Haiti’s first Domestic Flight in Seven Months

As eager travellers were ready to meet up with friends, family, and business partners in the northern city of Cap-Haitien, Haiti’s first domestic flight in seven months departed the country’s capital Thursday.
In addition to transporting 19 passengers, the Sunrise Airways flight was the first commercial aircraft to leave Port-au-Prince since operations were halted in November due to gang violence. Cars crowded the parking area outside the Guy Malary terminal as those engaged in the illicit market traded Haitian gourdes for U.S. dollars while labourers carried bags.
For the second time last year, the Toussaint Louverture airport in Port-au-Prince was forced to close in the middle of November after gangs opened fire on a Spirit Airlines flight as it was getting ready to land, injuring a flight attendant.Spirit, JetBlue, and American Airlines cancelled flights to Port-au-Prince that day due to attacks on other commercial aircraft.
