Pope’s Health is decent Despite Persistent Respiratory Problems

The Vatican said that Pope Francis was treated for a respiratory tract infection after his week-long battle with bronchitis worsened and he was brought to the hospital on Friday. The 88-year-old pope has had to postpone his plans until at least Monday due to yet another health issue.
Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said Francis was calm, in good spirits, and had read some newspapers when he arrived at Rome’s Gemelli hospital after holding his morning audiences. According to an evening Vatican report, Francis was in “fair” condition while on medication at Gemelli, with preliminary tests confirming a respiratory tract infection and a minor temperature. Although he had been giving his speeches to an assistant because of his breathing problems, he led an outdoor Mass on Sunday and went to a wider audience on Wednesday.
In the few audiences he was able to manage prior to his hospital stay on Friday, he looked pale and puffy. The oedema appeared to indicate that he was experiencing water retention as a result of the medicine he was taking for his lung infection.
At the beginning of an audience with CNN president Mark Thompson, Christopher Lamb, the network’s Vatican correspondent, said that while Francis was mentally sharp, his breathing issues made it difficult for him to speak for extended amounts of time. Francis has had continuous health issues, especially severe bronchitis in the winter, since having a portion of one lung removed when he was young.
