Peter Mutharika Is Endorsed By Malawi’s Largest Opposition Party To Be Its Flag Bearer

The Democratic Progress Party, the biggest opposition party in Malawi, has nominated 84-year-old former president Peter Mutharika as its nominee for president in 2025.

Mutharika, who served as the nation’s leader from 2014 to 2020, made a commitment to revive the economy, which had been beset by weak growth and shortages of cash.

Lazarus Chakwera, the current president, who is running for a second term, will oppose him. Although the United Transformation Movement has not yet officially announced the alliance, Mutharika also intends to join forces with them.

Mutharika was defeated by anti-corruption activist Lazarus Chakwera in his 2020 reelection campaign.

Following the country’s highest court’s nullification of the May 2019 election results that had awarded victory to Mutharika and his Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), the election was held again.

Mutharika claimed in 2021 that he was being politically prosecuted by the current administration.

August 2020 saw the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of Malawi freeze the personal bank accounts of Mutharika and his spouse, Gertrude, as part of an investigation aimed at determining his involvement in a cement scam involving five billion kwacha ($6.6 million).
