Un: Over 700,000 People In Central And West Africa Are Impacted By Floods
Over 700,000 people have already been affected by the floods that are currently plaguing Central and West Africa, according to a report from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
Just two months into the rainy season, the area has already had extremely heavy rains, which has led to this worrying predicament. “The flooding in the area, which has already impacted hundreds of thousands of people, worries the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. Over 700,000 people in the Central African Republic, Chad, Ivory Coast, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Liberia, Niger, Nigeria, Mali, and Togo have been affected by heavy rains and severe flooding just two months into the rainy season, according to Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, during a press conference.
The United Nations, along with its partners, has increased its support for the governments of the impacted nations in reaction to the magnitude of the disaster. Food distribution, housing, and water and sanitation services are all included in the help offered.
The governments of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Congo, and Niger have each received $10 million from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund this year. With millions of lives still at risk in sub-Saharan Africa due to climate shocks like floods, this help is intended to lessen their effects.
