Nigerian Regulator Permits up to 50 Percent Increase in Mobile Phone Charges

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has allowed up to a 50% increase in mobile phone charges. However, this falls far short of the 100% increase that telecoms operators had requested for the past six years. For more than ten years, Nigeria’s mobile phone tariffs have stayed unchanged. Analysts say the naira’s depreciation, paired with inflation, has dramatically increased operational costs for telecom companies.

However, the regulator stated that it had to regulate the increase in order to strike a balance between supporting long-term business growth and protecting consumers. It also stated that higher prices will help operators to invest in infrastructure and fund innovative programs, ultimately benefiting customers through enhanced services.

Telecom providers have also been ordered to clearly convey price changes to their customers. They must also demonstrate “measurable improvements in service delivery” in addition to the increases, according to the NCC. As the cost of living in Nigeria rises, the National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers, a consumer advocacy group, has pledged to challenge the decision.
