Nigeria and South Africa’s Dispute Over Deportee Compensation

Nigeria claims to be gathering information about its residents who have lately returned from South Africa in order to use it to demand payment from the South African government for enterprises and properties that were left behind.

Following anti-immigrant groups’ xenophobic marches, hundreds of Nigerians and other immigrants were displaced. According to Mmamoloko Kubayi, South Africa’s Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, over 50,000 foreign nationals have been processed for deportation and repatriation thus far.

According to Abuja, after losses have been confirmed, claims for compensation would be handled at the highest levels. However, a South African presidential minister stated on Monday that Pretoria would not provide any compensation.

According to Khumbudzo Ntshaveni, a large number of Nigerians resided in illegal informal settlements.According to local broadcaster eNCA, Ntshaveni stated, “If you are going to tell us about a shack or informal settlement, you are already violating the law. Since anti-immigrant protests started in June, tens of thousands of foreigners have fled South Africa. The majority of repatriations must go to Uganda, Mozambique, Malawi, and Zimbabwe.
