Kenyan Officer Loses life in Haiti Accident

An accident involving two armored vehicles in Haiti’s capital has left two people dead and eight Kenyan police officers injured, officials confirmed. The incident took place on Sunday evening along the Kenscoff-Pétion-Ville route on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince.

According to Jack Ombaka, spokesman for the U.N.-backed mission combating gangs in Haiti, one of the fatalities was a Kenyan police officer, while the other was a civilian. Of the eight injured officers, three were reported to be in serious condition and were airlifted to the neighboring Dominican Republic for specialized treatment. Ombaka explained that the crash occurred when an armored vehicle towing a disabled one broke down, leading to the accident.

This latest tragedy brings to three the number of Kenyan police officers killed since the multinational mission in Haiti began more than a year ago. One officer was earlier killed in a gang attack, while another went missing and is presumed dead.
