Kenya: US Cutbacks to Humanitarian Aid cause Riots in the Kakuma Refugee Camp

Local media reported that police were shooting demonstrators with live ammunition Monday as widespread protests shook security in the Kakuma refugee camp in northwest Kenya.
The camp’s lack of food and water caused the demonstrations to break out.
Residents claim that the camp’s circumstances have drastically worsened and that many people now find it difficult to obtain basic essentials.
The shortages coincide with a reduction in humanitarian help in Kenya as a result of financial cuts made by USAID, the US Agency for International Development. Amnesty International estimates that some 200,000 refugees and asylum seekers reside in the camp, which is among the biggest in the world.
Mama Kayembe, a Congolese refugee at Kakuma Refugee Camp, stated: “Kenyans have placed all the responsibility on Donald Trump since he became president of the United States. Trump is being blamed for workers’ unpaid wages. Trump is to blame for everything, including the lack of medication at the hospital and the fact that we now have to pay for school tuition. We’re sick of Trump.
In addition to causing hunger, the assistance restrictions have also increased insecurity in the camp. Without alternate financial sources, there are worries that things in the camp may get much worse.
