Italian Police Detain an ICC-Wanted Libyan Warlord
A Libyan warlord was taken into custody by Italian police using an International Criminal Court order. The Reform and Rehabilitation Institution is an infamous network of prison facilities operated by the government-backed Special Defence Force, and Ossama Anjiem, also known as Ossama al-Masri, is in charge of its Tripoli section. As a military police force, the SDF fights high-profile crimes like murders, kidnappings, and illegal migration.
The SDF, like many other militias in western Libya, has been linked to crimes during the civil conflict that ensued after long-time Libyan tyrant Moammar Gadhafi was overthrown and killed in 2011. Arrest warrants for alleged crimes in Libya outside of the civil conflict, including in detention centres where human rights organisations have reported violations, were recently issued by the head prosecutor of the International Criminal Court.
The Hague-based court issued a warrant for al-Masri’s arrest in Turin on Sunday after he attended a Juventus-Milan football match the previous evening, according to Italian newspapers Avvenire and La Stampa. Although he hadn’t been formally appointed, his attorney Daniele Folino acknowledged the arrest but said he couldn’t give any specifics.
