India’s Modi is Greeted by The Ethiopian PM in Addis Ababa at The Beginning of a Two-Day Visit

Tuesday marked the arrival of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Ethiopia for a two-day trip of the east African nation. The two met with members of the Indian community in Addis Ababa following their meeting with his Ethiopian counterpart, Abiy Ahmed. Lines of people waving Indian flags and shouting Modi’s name welcomed him with a traditional Indian dance performance. Additionally, local Ethiopian singers sang in Hindi at his home.

New Delhi sees Ethiopia as an important geostrategic and economic ally in Africa, where India aims to increase its power in the face of rivalry with China. Ethiopia provides Indian officials with a useful base; it is home to the headquarters of the African Union, and its 2024 membership in the expanded BRICS group has given it more political and economic clout.

Ethiopia’s economy is thought to be reviving, and India has a long history there. There are more than 175 Indian businesses there, mostly in the textile industry. Indian aspirations have switched to the strategic mining industry after early investments in agriculture were hampered by operational and financial restrictions.
