Eskom Suspends Operations in a Cape Town Suburb following an Assault on Staff Members.
Eskom has evacuated from Site B in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, following an incident on Monday that left one worker gravely hurt.
Following the incident, the power provider said that activities in the X and XA parts of Site B had been temporarily halted.
In a statement, Eskom claimed that “individuals from the community” had attacked two of its employees.
The employees’ car keys were purportedly taken by the attackers, which kept them from finishing their duties. One of the workers suffered severe injuries and is in the process of getting medical assistance. Only the car keys were found after the incident; an Eskom enterprise digital assistant, a specialized mobile computing device, was also taken with the keys, “the utility stated.
Due to the temporary service suspension, customers may go without energy for extended periods, which is likely to slow down efforts to restore the utility.
Before determining the appropriate time for staff to return to the region and begin operations, Eskom will closely collaborate with the local authorities to assess the incident. According to the statement, Eskom “strongly condemns the harassment of its employees and will always prioritize their safety.
