Eritrea is Accused by Ethiopia of Planning to Attack it

As tensions between the two nations over control of the Red Sea continue to rise, Ethiopia has accused Eritrea of planning to attack it. Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos accused Eritrea of conspiring with the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), an opposition organization based in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region, in a letter to the UN Secretary-General dated October 2.

Eritrea and the TPLF were also charged by Ethiopia of “funding, mobilizing and directing armed groups” in the Amhara region of Ethiopia, where the federal army has been engaged in combat with rebels.

In recent months, the relationship between the two nations has grown increasingly strained, evoking memories of their troubled past. After gaining independence from Ethiopia in 1993, Eritrea seized control of the Red Sea coastline.

Tens of thousands of people were killed during the 1998–2000 border war between the two nations. After taking office in 2018, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed reduced long-standing tensions. However, in recent years, Ethiopia has been attempting to reclaim access to the Red Sea, which has caused tensions with its neighbour.
