Due to Violence in the DRC, the UN Authorizes the Evacuation of Burundi Employees’ Families

According to a document obtained by news agency AFP, the UN has approved the evacuation of the families of its international employees from Burundi, despite the ongoing bloodshed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

According to a UN official, a number of flights had been chartered since the February 21st letter. Two significant cities in eastern DRC have been taken over by the M23 rebels, who are supported by Rwanda, in recent weeks.

The violence has edged closer to the Burundian border as the group has pressed forward in its advance. The country, which previously provided the DRC with some 10,000 troops, has become more and more alarmed. The president of Burundi declared this week that his nation was dedicated to using peaceful measures to settle the disputes between the two nations.

His remarks coincided with reports from military sources that Burundi had deployed troops ten kilometers from the M23 push along its border. The conflict has afflicted the mineral-rich east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo for almost thirty years, beginning with the Rwandan genocide in 1994.
