Drc: Goma Teams Scramble To Find Increasing Instances Of Mpox
As the number of cases of monkeypox in the city keeps growing daily, medical staff in a health center in Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), are working extremely hard to identify patients.
Following the confirmation of cases among children and adults in over a dozen countries and the transmission of a novel strain of the virus, the World Health Organization on Wednesday deemed the mpox outbreaks in the Congo and other parts of Africa to be a global emergency.
With over 500 deaths from mpox outbreaks, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said earlier this week that the virus was a public health emergency and requested assistance from other countries to halt its spread.
There have been up to nine confirmed instances of monkey pox since Friday, August 9. Head of the Multi-Epidemic Center and general practitioner at Goma Provincial Hospital Dr. Rachel Maguru stated, “We segregate those who present with worrisome lesions before taking a sample.
Dr. Maguru stated that while the sick are kept in isolation, the medical staff was concerned that those exhibiting symptoms would decide not to visit the hospital.
“Because they will stay in their surroundings, this could result in a chain reaction of infections,” she stated.
