Conakry at a Standstill Amid Protests by the Opposition
The junta routinely forbids these protests, which are regularly organized by the opposition and cause major disruption in the capital of Guinea, often leading to deadly conflicts. Monday, January 6, was a day of intense tension in Conakry, the capital of Guinea.
Despite being prohibited by the government, the Forces vives de Guinée staged a protest in Conakry to call for the overthrow of the junta that has ruled the nation for more than three years. Initial reports state that the crackdown resulted in one fatality and numerous injuries. Several persons were also taken into custody.
Despite a strong police presence and strong warnings that kept many potential demonstrators at home, the city saw major disruptions in transportation and trade. The junta that overthrew President Alpha Condé in 2021 is being urged to resign and institute a civilian-led transition by the Forces vives de Guinée (FVG), an alliance of opposition parties and civil society organizations.
The transition to civilian administration is still questionable more than three years after the upheaval. In Koloma, where demonstrators and police clashed last Sunday, a leading member of the Union des forces démocratiques de Guinée was arrested.
