As Global treaty Negotiations get under way in Canada, Kenya has high Hopes Regarding Plastic Pollution.
A global gathering of negotiators and observers is underway in Canada till April 29th in an effort to draft a deal intended to halt the constantly worsening issue of plastic pollution.
Kenyans struggle daily to manage the amount of plastic waste that finds its way into their nation, thousands of miles away from the Shaw Center conference in Ottawa.
The Pura Terra recycling factory employees in Nairobi, Kenya are tackling the issue.
Since we are the only business in the neighborhood, we know we will not be able to filter through every plastic brought in. We thus anticipate that the meeting taking place in Canada will result in the creation of rules that will enable us to recycle 100% of the plastics that are created.”
According to the company’s website, Kenya produces 2000 tonnes of waste per day, and by 2030, that number is expected to rise to 5.5 million tonnes per year.
175 countries decided in March 2022 to create the first legally binding agreement against plastic waste, which includes ocean pollution, by the end of 2024.
This week-long conference in Canada is the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee’s (INC) fourth session.
Its chairman emphasized the importance of the issue: “Our collective responsibility and duty in this INC process is to deliver a treaty that reflects (the) urgency of ending (the) plastic pollution crisis and that meets the expectations of citizens in all of our countries calling for a change,” stated Luis Vayas Valdivieso.
