After Their Boat Overturned, More Than 150 African Migrants Were Reported Missing And Over A Dozen Dead

The International Organization for Migration reported that a chaotic search and rescue operation resulted from a boat capsize off the coast of Mauritania, which claimed the lives of over a dozen migrants and left at least 150 more missing. The migrants were traveling to Europe.

The IOM said in a statement on Wednesday that the boat carrying 300 migrants overturned on Monday near Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritius, and that 120 of them were saved by the Mauritius Coast Guard.

It stated, “Tragically, 15 people were confirmed dead upon arrival,” and continued to search.

In order to reach Spain’s Canary Islands, migrants must travel north past Mauritania after leaving West Africa via Senegal in recent years.

Strong winds and Atlantic currents can overwhelm pirogues, the artisanal fishing boats used by the migrants in the most recent example. Numerous people die or vanish throughout the perilous trek, with some survivors’ remains occasionally ending up on the opposite side of the Atlantic. Nevertheless, thousands have made it through.

Four separated and unaccompanied children were among those rescued from Monday’s event thus far, according to the IOM, which also stated that ten survivors were sent to hospitals for medical care.

African migrants who are traveling to Europe frequently want to escape turmoil and poverty. Even if it is their path, their family may decide to take them out in the hopes of better things rather than making the decision themselves.
