After Decades without Citizenship, Thousands of Adopted Americans risk Deportation
Hundreds of thousands of foreign children have been brought to the US for adoption by American families. However, it seems that thousands of them have been denied citizenship after a number of years due to a procedural flaw that the government has known about for decades and hasn’t addressed.
Some of these adoptees are in hiding because they are afraid that if they tell the authorities, they will be sent back to the nation from which the United States said it had rescued them. Deportations of some have already occurred.
Supported by a rare bipartisan alliance that includes the Southern Baptist Convention and leftist immigration groups, a bill to assist them has been in Congress for ten years. However, it hasn’t gone away. Proponents point to the extreme partisanship around immigration as the cause of adoptees who are legally the children of American parents.
Following the Korean War, the contemporary system of international adoption came into being. Due to a decline in the domestic supply of suitable kids brought on by cultural changes and birth control access, American families were in dire need of children. Korea sought to eliminate hungry mouths.
