A Journalist Was Kidnapped in Guinea During a Crackdown on the Media

As the military dictatorship continues to tighten its hold on independent media, reporters were informed Wednesday by the journalist’s wife and attorney that an investigative journalist had been kidnapped in Guinea’s capital by men dressed in security forces uniforms. Mariama Lamarana Diallo, the wife of Habib Marouane Kamara, the editor-in-chief of the online investigative site lerevelateur224.com, informed reporters in the city on Wednesday that her husband was leaving for Conakry on Tuesday night to meet with a friend and a businessman.

According to Diallo, the friend who was with her husband claimed that guys in a pickup truck dressed in security force uniforms stopped them. According to the buddy, the policeman cracked the rear windshield and forcibly removed Kamara from the car. A witness who wished to remain anonymous out of concern for possible consequences confirmed this to The Associated Press.

According to Diallo, the men grabbed Kamara up, tossed him in their truck, and drove off after beating him with batons until he passed out. After being coerced into the police car, Kamara’s friend was freed and has since fled into hiding. Salifou Beavogui, Kamara’s lawyer, and his wife stated they haven’t heard from Kamara since yesterday. Diallo spoke the words, “I am speechless,” and then started crying.
