A Gunman Attack in North-Central Nigeria Has Claimed 150 lives

As the villagers continued to search through burnt homes, count the dead, and search for the scores of individuals who were still missing, survivors said Monday that the number of people killed in a gunman assault over the weekend in north-central Nigeria had risen to 150. Late Friday night, attackers broke into the Yelewata hamlet in Benue state, shooting at sleeping inhabitants and burning their houses, according to witnesses and the local farmers union.

According to Matthew Nlan, the gunfire “lasted for more than five hours.” “They burnt some of our community members in stores there; there are some stores that are housing more than 50 persons,” he stated. “They all burned down. Here, many are killed, while others are reduced to ashes.

Although no one immediately took credit for the deaths, attacks of this nature are frequent in northern Nigeria, where farmers and herders frequently conflict over scarce water and land. Authorities and observers have warned that more herders are picking up guns, making the protracted conflict deadlier in recent years. The herders, who are primarily of Fulani descent, are accused by the farmers of damaging their products while grazing their sheep on their property.
