The US has Put Sanctions on Rwanda’s Defence Ministry Because it has ties to Rebels in Congo

The US has put sanctions on Rwanda’s defence ministry because it is thought to be helping the M23 rebel group fight in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Washington wants to put more pressure on Kigali to pull its troops out of its neighbouring country and stop what it is said to be supporting the group and its political arm, the Congo River Alliance.

Also, sanctions have been put on Zigama Credit and Savings Society because the US says it is a key part of Rwanda’s support for the rebels. The US Treasury Department said that the Rwandan ministry of defence told the army to send thousands of soldiers to the North and South Kivu areas in the east of Congo.

It also said Rwandan troops fought alongside the rebels and provided weapons, training, and other essential support. The UN has said Rwanda is behind the M23, but Kigali has denied it many times.

The foreign office in Kinshasa welcomes the sanctions. They happened months after the leaders of Rwanda and the DRC signed a peace deal in Washington, D.C., that was mediated by the US and was meant to end the fighting.
