Bolsonaro Demands an Annulment of the Poll as Lula wins Reelection in Brazil
Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the leftist president of Brazil, made a stunning comeback on Sunday to win reelection, but Flavio Bolsonaro, his opponent, refused to concede defeat and declared he would try to have the election voided.
Lula’s triumph prevented Brazil from succumbing to a conservative tsunami that has caused many nations, including Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Peru, to tilt to the right with the support of US President Donald Trump.
The legendary communist, who turns 81 on Tuesday, surprised everyone by winning an unprecedented fourth term. Official results show that he received 51.8 percent of the vote, while Flavio Bolsonaro received 48.2 percent. Lula received about 4.4 million more votes.
The senator is the son of former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro, who is incarcerated for 27 years for attempting a coup following his defeat to Lula in the nation’s most recent election in 2022. Due to a Supreme Court decision that extended voting by two hours after some polling places had already closed, Sunday’s vote was characterised by confusion.
Lula requested the change after complaining that buses had been removed from service in several places, preventing people from casting ballots. Due to heavy rainfall, Flavio Bolsonaro also asked for an extension in some areas; however, he called the decision “unacceptable” and a “dirty trick.
