Tunisian Reporter Gets four Years in Prison for Terrorism Charges

An independent journalist named Zied el-Heni has been given four more years in prison in Tunisia. This time, he was sentenced on charges related to terrorism. He spoke out against President Kais Saied and was jailed for a year in May for comments he made about press freedom.

In the most recent case, he asked to check leaked audio recordings that were said to be from politician Mondher Lounissi, who used to be the interim leader of the Ennahdha opposition movement. It was said in the charges that he had set up a terrorist group and failed to report a terrorist crime, according to his lawyer.

With the goal of keeping his sources safe, El-Heni refused to give the police his cell phone without a warrant. Lounissi got nine years in prison for the same crime, but el-Heni’s lawyer said it was still not clear what the recordings said. International groups for journalists have spoken out against the decision, calling it a worsening of Tunisia’s attacks on the press.
