Police Continue Search after Eighth Woman Discovered Dead in Ekurhuleni
South African police are stepping up their operations in and around Kempton Park following the discovery of an eighth woman’s death in Ekurhuleni, east of Johannesburg. The latest death was recorded in KwaThema, adding to a string of homicides that have caused concern among women in the region.
Police have formed a specialist task force and are contemplating increased operations, including a lockdown of Kempton Park and adjacent areas, while detectives try to determine whether the crimes are linked.
Authorities have emphasised that they have not determined that all eight deaths are linked, and they have urged the public to refrain from speculation while investigations proceed. Police are seeking information and have cautioned women to avoid walking or exercising alone, especially in remote areas.
The deaths have created growing dread in nearby communities, with citizens demanding increased police presence. Authorities are offering a 400,000-rand prize for information that could lead to arrests as the investigation proceeds.
