The Return of Relatives from Ukraine is Being Demanded by families in Cameroon
Families in Cameroon are advocating for the return of relatives who were purportedly recruited to fight for Russia in Ukraine. On Wednesday, the “Bring Back Our Sons and Brothers” organization conducted a peaceful march in Yaoundé, concluding at the Russian embassy to request action from both the Cameroonian government and Moscow.
The protesters are urging the two countries to dismantle what they refer to as clandestine recruitment networks that target Cameroonians with the prospect of employment in Russia. The Russian army has recruited at least 1,417 Africans, with over 300 of them reportedly being killed, according to a report by the All Eyes on Wagner collective.
Families allege that certain relatives were promised civilian employment but ultimately found themselves on the Ukrainian front line. A woman who has not heard from her spouse in nine months asserts that she is seeking the truth regarding his whereabouts and is demanding his return. The organisers of the campaign are advocating for increased collaboration between Russia and Cameroon in order to prevent additional recruitment.
