The Humanitarian Situation for Sudanese Refugees in the CAR is Dire
The humanitarian situation in the Central African Republic (CAR) is still dire and mostly overlooked, despite a relative decrease in international attention. 35% of the population, or 2.3 million individuals, are extremely vulnerable.
There are far more individuals in need than can be met by humanitarian aid alone.
The main sources of vulnerabilities that result in humanitarian needs are still conflicts, especially in the west and southeast, epidemics, and climate-related challenges.
This quiet crisis has the potential to intensify and escalate regional instability in the absence of greater visibility, unity, and political involvement. Conditions that are already precarious are being made worse by regional dynamics.
As of March 2026, the CAR was home to 35,048 Sudanese refugees due to the war in Sudan. This is especially true in Birao in the northwest Vakaga Prefecture, where the population has doubled since then, placing a strain on already limited resources.
Since 2025, underfunding has forced the closure of almost 120 humanitarian facilities belonging to 60 organizations, including six in Vakaga that were housing 62% of Sudanese refugees. Without prompt, strong, long-term, focused, and adaptable assistance, CAR runs the risk of experiencing a worsening humanitarian crisis that could threaten the entire region.
