Reports of Mob Violence in Jos, Nigeria, Following Fatal Shooter Attack
A journalist from the news agency AFP witnessed riots breaking out on Wednesday in the Nigerian city of Jos, which may have resulted in the deaths of two individuals. Unidentified gunmen opened fire in a bar over the weekend, killing over 30 people. In the wake of the massacre, Christians were allegedly targeted on Palm Sunday, the day before Easter, according to unverified claims made on social media.
The city of Jos in northcentral Nigeria is home to both Muslims and Christians, and they coexist harmoniously. Plateau state is located in this city. However, the city has a history of violent sectarian riots caused by its residents’ intense religious and ethnic tensions. A journalist from AFP witnessed a mob of people erupting into carnage, a “keke” tricycle cab engulfed in flames, and masses of people frantically fleeing the scene.
Two corpses were discovered in the street by another reporter. Neither the composition nor the intended aim of the mobs are known. Conflicts between farmers and herders in rural Plateau state often involve land ownership; nevertheless, these disputes can transcend religious and ethnic boundaries, further inflaming tensions in a territory where “indigenous” status can spark political unrest.
